Pitching Velocity and Exit Velocity by Age: Read the Charts Carefully

Search for "average pitching speed by age" and you'll get a dozen confident tables telling you a 12-year-old should throw 55 mph. Almost none of them say where the number came from. Before you let one of those tables set expectations for your child, it's worth understanding what data actually exists.

Why the charts disagree with each other

There is no comprehensive public dataset of youth pitching velocity. What exists are samples, and each sample has a bias baked into it:

A chart built from showcase attendees will tell you your child is behind. A chart built from a random rec league would tell you they're ahead. Neither is measuring your child.

What the better data actually shows

One of the more transparent published analyses comes from Driveline Baseball, which looked at velocity aging curves across roughly 100 athletes in the first year of its academy programme, measured across bullpens, live at-bats and games.

What it reported is worth reading carefully, because it isn't a benchmark table — it's a rate of change:

And the authors are explicit about the limits: the data "does not apply to all youth players — only the ones that we had in our Academy in our first year." They also note that a player's numbers at any age mix physical maturity with technical skill, so a late-developing player can look worse than their actual ability.

That caveat is the most useful sentence in the whole subject. The honest takeaway isn't a target number — it's that young arms and bats typically gain a few miles per hour a year, and the rate slows as players get older.

So how fast should a 12-year-old throw?

The genuinely correct answer is: faster than they did last year, with mechanics that don't hurt, inside a workload their arm can handle. Any specific number you're given is either a sample from a group your child isn't in, or an invention.

Exit velocity: the same problem, one useful nuance

Exit velocity — how fast the ball leaves the bat — has the same sampling issues, plus one extra trap. Most published youth exit-velocity figures are maximum readings off a tee, which run considerably higher than what a player produces against live pitching, where timing is the limiting factor.

So if a chart says 12U players hit 65 mph and your child reads 55 in a game, you may be comparing a tee maximum with a game average. Those are different measurements.

  2. Height and weight, because most youth velocity gain is a by-product of growth, and seeing them together explains a lot.
  3. Strikes and walks, the skill that wins youth games.
  4. Innings and pitch counts, so the workload picture is real rather than remembered.
